10th FOUR NATIONS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Championship History

First Played in 1987 in New Zealand, the Four Nations Team Championship (FNTC) started off as a goodwill amateur golf tournament. The executive director of golf association in Canada, New Zealand and Australia decided their country°s best amateur golfers needed some friendly competition and the Pacific Amateur Teams Championship was born. Japan then joined the competition in 1989. In 1997 the event was renamed the Four Nations Team Championship.

The Three-day round robin match play tournament rotates between the four countries every two years. It consists of foursomes playing alternate shot matches in the mornings and singles matches in the afternoons, similar to the format of the Walker Cup. Originally, teams were made up of only four players, and compete by 72 holes stroke play but changed to match play format with six players in 1993.

Australia has dominated the event with seven wins in the nine championships. Japan won in 1997 and Canada won in 2001.

Many of the players who have competed in the FNTC are now professionals. Aaron Baddeley, members of the 1999 Australian Team and Hideto Tanihara, member of the 1999 Japanese Team, currently play on US PGA tour.

Defending Champions

The team of Richard Moir, Robin Hodgetts, Kurt Barnes, James Nitties, Luke Hickott, Michael Sim led Australia to its 9th Four Nations Team Championship in 2001 at the Christchurch Golf Club in New Zealand.
